The new TV bundle – Nielsen

Much has been said about the impact of streaming on the way audiences engage with TV, but the extent is no better exemplified than by the behavior of audiences in TV homes who don’t pay for cable or satellite programming. A specific subset of these homes, which rely on a digital antenna for free, over-the-air (OTA) programming, watch the most broadcast programming of all U.S. TV households, but that’s starting to change.  The significant amount of broadcast TV viewing within these homes certainly isn’t surprising, given that’s what digital antennas provide access to. These former broadcast programs are now more connected and OTT content has become more popular. This is allowing them to balance their TV programming with sports and news. OTA home viewers still see more broadcast programming that those who have broadband or cable plus, but they are less likely to be able to access it. 1 Television households are now watching less TV than ever before (1:54 per person per day in 2017 vs...

Twitter Will Keep An Elon Musk Ally On Its Board—Even Though Shareholders Rejected Him

NEW YORK – JANUARY 2007: Egon Dabur, Co-Ceo at Silver Lake, is present at PBR Unleash The Beast at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 7, 2022. Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images Getty Images T witter will let Egon Durban, the co-CEO of Silver Lake, keep his board seat even though shareholders turned down his reelection at the company’s annual meeting. His time on the board pre-dates Elon Musk’s arrival, dating back to an earlier entanglement with another unsolicited investor. But, in the past, Durban has been a close Musk confidant, and the company’s decision to keep him is a reminder of the complex machinations—and personalities—involved in the highly public fights over Twitter’s future during the last several years. Twitter believes Durban lost the election because of a shareholder advisory firm’s recommendation against him, not because of his relationship with Musk, the company says in a new SEC filing. That firm, ISS, recommended Twitter shareholders rej...

Specter Of Elon Musk—And His Wishy-Washy Buyout—Loom Over Twitter’s Shareholder Meeting

Elon Musk is the founder and CEO of SpaceX. AFP via Getty Images E lon Musk didn’t speak at Wednesday’s annual meeting of Twitter shareholders, and he didn’t say anything about it on Twitter. The man still seemed to be a huge presence throughout the day. The musk of Musk—it’s a potent thing. You could tell something was in the air from the two shareholder proposals put forward by the National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative think tank, and the impassioned comments the center’s executives gave about the ideas. One group asked Twitter to audit its diversity initiatives. The right-leaning group claims they have gone too far, and are now discriminating against both men and women. The other asked Twitter to publish a review into its lobbying efforts, which the center, presumably, thinks will show a liberal bias on the company’s part. “Let’s cure the DEI mind virus spreading inside Twitter,” said a speaker from the think tank. He addressed his remarks directly ...

How The Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Elon Musk Could Affect His Twitter Deal

Elon Musk looks down and pauses as he talks during the press conference held at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas near Boca Chica Village on February 10, 2022. AFP via Getty Images h, here you were thinking that Elon Musk’s—baffling, quixotic—crusade against spam bots was the most important thing we’d need to discuss in Musk-Twitter-dom this week. Well, it’s not, and that comes from the fresh amount of uncertainty injected into Elon Musk’s will-he-won’t-he buyout of Twitter on Thursday evening when Insider detailed sexual misconduct allegations against him. SpaceX’s former flight attendant was allegedly $250,000 paid by Musk to make her quiet after she saw his naked penis and asked for progeny. Musk told Insider there’s “a lot more to this story” without going into further detail and has sought to characterize the reporting as a politically motivated attack on him, sparked by his outspoken desire to roll back moderation policies at Twitter if he actually d...

Elon Musk’s Mom Sparks Backlash Defending Her Son From Twitter Trolls

Photo by C Flanigan/Getty Images Getty Images Ever since announcing his Twitter acquisition, Elon Musk’s name has been regularly trending on the social media platform, as his strange commentary and bizzare business negotiations play out in public, via erratic Twitter posts and poop emojis. Musk’s latest crusade is against spambots, which he believes make up a higher percentage of Twitter users than the company acknowledges. Musk’s mother, the author, dietitian and model Maye Musk, took her son’s claim very seriously indeed, and started searching Twitter for accounts that post mean comments about her billionaire son, flagging them as potential bots and declaring them to be “nasty.” It’s already surreal to see one of the wealthiest men on the planet regularly post “dad...

An Anthology of Fashion.” at The Metropolitan … [+] Museum of Art, May 2, 2022 in New York City RW/MediaPunch/IPx (Updating…) Elon Musk had considered starting his own social media company prior to buying Twitter. According to a recent SEC filing. At the end of March, Musk made initial contact with Twitter after accumulating a more than 9% stake in the company that, for a time, made him the company’s largest shareholder. According to the proxy statement, he spoke to Parag Agrawal, Chairman of Twitter and Musk on March 31. He was contemplating what to do about the shares and his interests in Twitter and social media. It would’ve put him on the same path as President Trump, who launched his Truth Social app in February with lackluster results. Musk chose to go a different path and proposed, and then won board approval for, a $54.20-a share buyout of Twitter. Since then, Musk said that the dea...

Teens On Instagram Can Still Easily Access Illegal Drugs, New Research Shows

NurPhoto via Getty Images D New research shows that young Instagram users are still able to quickly access drug-related content despite some safety concerns and increased political pressure. A report from the Tech Transparency Project, an independent tech watchdog, found that some accounts are actually selling illegal substances such as MDMA. While Instagram has made efforts to curb drug-related hashtags, which remain a core element of the app’s architecture, the group’s research found it was possible to find drug content simply by dropping the hashtag in searches. Searching for “mdma for sale,” not “#mdma,” turned up multiple accounts peddling the drug, the researchers say. This also worked when searching for “oxy”—shortened slang for the opioid oxycontin—and “Xanax,” the anti-anxiety medicine. Tech Transparency Project’s latest research follows an earlier study published by the group in December. It detailed how teenagers can find drug content online and sometimes buy dr...

Elon Musk says he would reverse Twitter’s Trump ban

New York SME Business  —  Elon Musk said Tuesday that he would restore former President Donald Trump’s banned account on Twitter if his deal to acquire the company is completed. Musk’s remarks at Financial Times’ Future of the Car conference mark his first public acknowledgment of what had been widely expected since the billionaire announced plans to buy the social media giant for $44 billion. Musk has previously said he thinks Twitter should be more “reluctant to delete things” and “very cautious with permanent bans.” On Tuesday, he called Twitter’s decision to ban Trump in January 2021 a “mistake.” “I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump, I think that was a mistake,” Musk said. “I would reverse the perma-ban … But my opinion, and Jack Dorsey, I want to be clear, shares this opinion, is that we should not have perma-bans.” Dorsey, Twitter’s cofounder and former CEO, tweeted Tuesday following...

U.S. podcast listenership continues to grow, and audiences are resuming many pre-pandemic spending behaviors – Nielsen

Podcasts saw a remarkable increase in audience engagement during the pandemic which drove millions of people indoors and in front screens. In addition to the new listeners and increased engagement, there is also a growing number of listeners. While the rise in engagement is somewhat contrary to what might be expected amid the many consumer changes over the past two years, podcast listenership–even at home–has transformed much of the general public into light listeners. In fact, the U.S. podcast  listener base has grown by 40% 1 Over the last three years, 51% of customers have opted for this product. 2 According to them, they have been listening for the past two decades. Importantly, the strength of the mainstream-bound podcast industry spans beyond simply offering wide-ranging audiences a growing bevy of titles for content-hungry audiophiles—especially for advertisers. That’s because podcast audiences are shedding their COVID-induced spending inhibitions.  83% of Americans no...

Judge dismisses Trump lawsuit against Twitter over ban

SME Business  —  A federal judge in San Francisco has dismissed former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Twitter that sought to reinstate his banned account on the platform, according to a court filing. Twitter has won the case. It had requested Judge James Donato from the US District Court in the Northern District of California to dismiss the suit. In throwing out Trump’s case, Donato held that Twitter was not acting as an agent of the US government — as Trump had alleged — when it shut down his account and was therefore not infringing on Trump’s First Amendment rights to free speech. “The amended complaint does not plausibly allege a First Amendment claim against Twitter,” the decision said. “Plaintiffs’ first claim is dismissed.” “Donato also threw out Trump’s other claims, such as that Section 230 — the law shielding tech platforms from lawsuits over most user-generated content — is unconstitutional. ...

Amid Musk Takeover, Twitter Threw An Important Party In New York

Getty Images U nlike Twitter’s likely new owner and its many cofounders, Parag Agrawal, the new CEO, tweets only occasionally. But he did so last week, seeking to reassure a key group of Twitter stakeholders—advertisers, who contribute the lifeblood of company revenue—that the party was still on. Agrawal was referring to Twitter’s presentation at the annual New Front meetings in New York, where media companies like Twitter host presentations for advertisers outlining their plans for new products and their priorities for the rest of the year. And with that new owner, Elon Musk, having cast doubt on Twitter’s ad-driven business model during his $44 billion proposal to buy the company, the gathering assumed greater importance than it ordinarily might, a chance for Twitter executives to bolster advertiser confidence. Twitter hosted the event at Pier 17 Lower Manhattan on Wednesday. This glassy area overlooks the East River, Brooklyn Skyline, and Lady Liberty in the distance. This is...

Steering Clear of Groupthink in Business

Steering Clear of Groupthink in Business Businesses tend to create groups and panels to help them solve a problem or make a decision on something. Despite the virtue of bringing ideas together, these groups tend to kill creativity and innovation. Group members make quick decisions, especially when the most influential group members come up with an idea. Here are ways businesses can avoid the consequences that result from group think. • Leaders Should First Keep Their Ideas To Themselves Leaders or people with higher positions tend to influence the decisions made in a group. In most cases, group members will go with the group’s ideas made by influential people. According to pain management specialist Jordan Sudberg , employees might feel intimidated to share ideas contrasting with their leaders for fear of falling out of favor. Leaders should, therefore, first keep their opinions to themselves and encourage others to brainstorm and come up with their ideas. • Inclus...
