Reverse empathy getty Social media can suck the life out of you — if you let it. It is possible to resist this life-sucking effect. Twitter and other apps have made it possible for anyone to openly share their thoughts, feelings, opinions, and ideas with an enormous audience over the past decade. We’ve also had access to the inner thoughts and personal convictions of celebrities. We’ve seen politicians make grand announcements, and we’ve followed world figures like they are communicating directly to us. What have we done? In studying social media trends since the beginning and tracking sentiment on these platforms, it’s obvious we haven’t always reacted with empathy. A study showed that social media posts are becoming more negative over the past five years. These algorithms are being modified to encourage more negative or outrageous content. I’ve used the term reverse empathy to describe the typical interactions I’ve seen, especially when it comes to Facebook comments and Tw...

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – OCTOBER 01: Mark Zuckerberg is seen here, the founder and CEO at Facebook/Meta. … [+] Attended the UFC Fight Night at UFC APEX in Las Vegas on October 1, 2022. Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC Zuffa LLC A new announcement by CEO Mark Zuckerberg states that Meta intends to introduce a new badge blue for verified accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter this week. The service, which sounds an awful lot like Twitter’s Blue service, will cost $11.99 per month for users who apply on the web or $14.99 per month on iOS—likely because Apple takes a $3 cut on subscriptions and Facebook is trying to price that in. Meta, a government identification will be required to give users a blue checkmark. Zuckerberg stated that the goal of this project is to combat impersonation. Users will also “get direct access to customer support,” though it’s not immediately clear what that will look like. Small businesses often complain about the difficulty of communicating with Fac...

Meta improves its consumer-facing tool that explains why you’re seeing that ad

Image
Meta improves its consumer-facing tool that explains why you’re seeing that ad Meta today announced it’s making changes to increase transparency around ads. The company says it’s updating a nearly decade-old Facebook feature “Why am I seeing this ad?” to better explain to consumers how an AI technique called machine learning may have played a role in the ad’s placement, among other factors. Specifically, it will now highlight how user activity both on and off Facebook may inform its machine learning models and it will detail how those models work to connect topics. The company for years has fought off rumors that it’s listening to users’ conversations in order to target them with relevant ads. In reality, Facebook’s ability to precisely and eerily display ads about brands or businesses users had just been discussing offline is more likely the result of Meta’s highly developed ad technology that tracks users well beyond the Facebook app itself. But while this targeting has been effec...
