Security Systems Are Struggling Again Encrypted Traffic

Image
Traditional security systems aren’t holding up to incoming encrypted traffic anymore. The number of cyberattacks are on the rise – there were 1.5 times as many ransomware attacks in 2021 compared to 2020 with over 230 million ransomware attacks in just the first half of 2022. Attackers are clever as once they get past security systems they quickly hide their tracks and lay dormant so defenses don’t notice anything wrong. Over 70% of networks are dark space – network infrastructure such as firewalls, routers, proxies, and more meaning that once an attacker is in, they have nearly free reign within a network. This makes stopping threats before they breach a system even more important, but many legacy tools that are still in use aren’t able to handle encrypted traffic. Many IT professionals lack tools to detect, intercept, and analyze threats from encrypted sources. Many are also commonly not familiar enough with a network to be aware enough of every communications device....

MIAMI FL- 29 AUGUST: Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida gives an update on Hurricane Dorian. … [+] The media will be at the National Hurricane Center in Miami on 29 August 2019. As Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida, it is likely to reach Category 4. Photo by Eva Marie Uzcategui/Getty Images Getty Images Imagine creating a product that only works if it is limited to fewer users. This was true this past week, when Ron DeSantis announced his run for president on Twitter Spaces. The server crashed after 21 minutes and about 500,000 users were still connected. According to a report, the stream only started working when there were fewer than 250,000 users. Other reports reported that 600,000 attempted to listen in, and only around 161,000 really heard it. Consider how well this could work for other products, such as the Apple iPhone. Sure, you can buy one, but if Apple told us there was a limit on how many people could connect in your city at one time, we’d balk. How about bu...

Following UK antitrust order, Meta sells Giphy to Shutterstock for $53M after buying it for $400M Meta has finally found a willing buyer for Giphy, the animated GIF search engine it acquired for $400 million three years ago. Shutterstock announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Meta to buy Giphy in a transaction that “consists of $53 million of net cash paid at closing,” meaning Facebook’s parent company has recuperated just 13% of its money. Shutterstock said it expects the deal to close next month, with Meta also signing a commercial agreement to continue accessing Giphy’s content across its product suite. The announcement comes some seven months after the U.K.’s antitrust authority issued a final order for Meta to sell Giphy, on the grounds that the merger reduced dynamic competition. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) had originally ordered the sale way back in November, 2021, but the appeals process held things up for the better part of another ye...

Facebook and Google have ploughed more than $15 billion into India in the past decade as they raced to win the last great growth market. Their services now reach more than half a b...

FTC moves to completely prohibit Meta from monetizing kids

FTC moves to completely prohibit Meta from monetizing kids The Federal Trade Commission alleges that Meta has “repeatedly violated” privacy rules and proposes to tighten the agency’s 2020 order against the company, completely barring it from monetizing data from anyone under 18 in any way, among other new restrictions. The order in question took effect in 2020 but was created in 2019 as part of then-Facebook’s $5 billion settlement after the company violated a previous order. Now the FTC says that Facebook/Meta has violated the new order, as well as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Rule. “The company’s recklessness has put young users at risk, and Facebook needs to answer for its failures,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a news release . (Due to the order and said failures spanning both names of the company, both are also used throughout.) The 2020 order created an independent third-party assessor who would evaluate whether ...

Hacked verified Facebook pages impersonating Meta are buying ads from Meta Sketchy Facebook pages impersonating businesses are nothing new , but a flurry of recent scams is particularly brazen. A handful of verified Facebook pages were hacked recently and spotted slinging likely malware through ads approved by and purchased through the platform. But the accounts should be easy to catch — in some cases, they were impersonating Facebook itself. Social consultant Matt Navarra first spotted some of the ads, sharing them on Twitter.
